
The Piping & Dancing Association of New Zealand (Otago Centre) is gearing up to host one of the largest annual Highland and National Dancing Championships competition for many years, including the country’s top dancers.
More than 100 competitors, ranging in age from under 6 years to over 18 years, will take part in the event, to be held at the College of Education in Union St East.
The dancing will begin at 8.30am on Saturday, June 3, and will continue until mid-afternoon on Monday, June 5.
In addition, more than 70 pipers from across New Zealand will compete in the solo piping competition, which will incorporate the New Zealand Solo Open Piping Championships for the first time in 10 years.
A record 16 competitors have entered the open events and will be vying for the title of New Zealand’s open champion piper for 2023.
Five adjudicators are coming from the North Island to select the winners.
Piping sessions will be on Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, at the Edgar Learning Centre, John McGlashan College, starting at 8.30am each day.
Admission is free and spectators are welcome.
