Presented by Dr Glam (Dr Ian Chapman) and the Oxo Cubans, the spectacular tribute to the glam rock era will also feature singers Arlie McCormick and Steve Larkins, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ (Otago).
Putting together Ziggy’s Glam Rock Extravaganza, in support of a cause close to his heart, inspired Dr Chapman to bring back his Dr Glam performance persona for one last outing.
Having created Dr Glam as a performance teaching tool for his rock performance students at the University of Otago, Dr Chapman retired the character 10 years ago following the David Bowie tribute show at Sammy’s.
In the early 2020s, Dr Chapman went through the mill health-wise due to a brush with prostate cancer, and is now thankful to be back to 100% health.
His father died of prostate cancer many years ago.
"I decided I wanted to give something back, as they say, because I am extremely grateful for the treatment I received," he said.
"I figured the best way to raise money was by doing a one-off fundraising concert, so I hit up my friends the Oxo Cubans and they enthusiastically came on board with their musical prowess and their organisational skills.
"We’re also thrilled to be joined by two of Dunedin’s most loved and superbly talented singers in Steve Larkins and Arlie McCormick."
The repertoire for Friday’s Ziggy’s Glam Rock Extravaganza includes songs from artists spanning the glam rock era, including Alice Cooper, Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Kiss, Rocky Horror, T Rex and more.
"It’s a real glam celebration and the theatre is being specially set up to allow dancing," Dr Chapman said.
Audience members are encouraged to dress up "glam" in support of the cause.
