Musical Theatre Dunedin returns to the stage tonight with a feel-good musical comedy, packed with heart and heavenly harmonies.
Based on the hit film, Sister Act the Musical tells the story of glamorous disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a crime and is placed in protective custody — in a convent.
What begins as culture shock quickly turns into something magical as Deloris transforms a struggling choir into a powerhouse of soul, spirit and sound, forging friendships along the way.
The Musical Theatre Dunedin production of Sister Act the Musical, to be staged from tonight until May 23 at Mosgiel’s Coronation Hall, is led by the team of director Sara Georgie, musical director Sam van Betuw and choreographer Olivia Larkins, along with vocal coach Tori Lenore.
The cast features Hamilton performer Jessica Ruck Nu’u, who brings talent and experience to the role of Deloris.
Playing opposite her in the role of Mother Superior is Dunedin performer Alethea Chittenden, with other principal cast members played by Clare Lewis, Mason Bouzaid and Joshua Larkins.
Taking on the roles of singing-dancing nuns and altar boys are an enthusiastic cast of local performers of a range of ages and experience, performing the original, high-energy score by Alan Menken.
Bursting with disco flair, laugh-out-loud moments and uplifting music, Sister Act the Musical is a joyful celebration of sisterhood, self-discovery and finding your voice. — Allied Media
