The concert, to be held tomorrow night from 7.30pm at Knox Church, will feature a programme of operatic and contemporary songs, with repertoire chosen and introduced by Lemalu.
Lemalu will be accompanied by Sandra Crawshaw (piano) and David Burchell (organ), as well as the Dunedin RSA choir, in which his father, Foalima Lemalu, sings second bass.
The RSA choir, conducted by Karen Knudson, will sing music reflecting on Remembrance Day and peace by Verdi, Dvorak, Holst and Karl Jenkins.
Dunedin Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Ralph Miller will also feature as soloist, along with young Dunedin tenor Jesse Hanan — a third-year student at the University of Otago and an RSA Choir scholar.
Tomorrow night’s performance will be a rare opportunity to hear Lemalu, who regularly performs on the world’s top stages, in Dunedin.
The former Dunedin bass/baritone singer was recently appointed deputy head of the Vocal and Opera Department at the Royal College of Music, London — one of the most prestigious music schools in the world.
An alumni of the University of Otago and the Royal College of Music, Lemalu has been professor of vocal studies at the college since 2023. — Allied Media
