The latest technology, combined with the talent of graphic designers and printers have made wedding stationery into an art form.

From elegant and and beautiful to quirky and amusing, stationery covers everything from wedding invitations, to the wedding ceremony, menus, table placements, tags for the favours bags and thankyou notes, and provides a chance once more for the couple to place their individual stamp on their wedding day. Sationery also represents a superb keepsake for guests.

It's important, and thoughtful, that guests receive their invitations early, particularly when so many fly from all corners of the earth to attend weddings and want the benefits of early airline bookings. A good way of getting around this is to send out a ``Save-this- date'' message to overseas friends and families by electronic or written notes, or the social websites, which can be followed up by a formal invitation later.

Guests within New Zealand should receive their invitations eight to 10 weeks beforehand, particularly if the wedding is to be held close to Christmas or Easter when airlines can be booked out months in advance. It is important that stationery orders should be placed early. Also keep in mind the fact that many commercial printers close in late December for an extended holiday period which may affect completion of an order. Although so much hinges on the couple's individual taste (many on astrict budget design their own) there will always be new trends. These include distinctive vintage looks and stationery in the style of old-fashioned carnival posters using blocks of print and decorative fonts. Others are minimalist, in the style of the postwar '40s and '50s. Crystals, shells and ribbons come into the equation, as do the colour theme of the wedding.

Professionals from commercial printers to those who handcraft stationery can supply samples, information packs and quotes. Talk to them.

TIP: Personally designed Ecards are another way of contacting overseas friends and family. Customised to include photographs, videos, music and messages, these are emailed. And don't forget the online stationery shops that can also create something unique to the couple.
