August 9: Dunedin's historic Savoy Restaurant has been saved.

A Dunedin businessman has bought the business and will continue to operate it as it has been in the past.

The future of the restaurant was uncertain until yesterday when Mr Stewart Clark (46) announced he had purchased it.

It is his intention that the "Savoy will remain the Savoy" and he will retain the elegant and peaceful atmosphere the establishment has.

Mr Clark is managing director of Jays Ltd, a city bakery, and began in the business from his father's business of Clark's Cake Shop Ltd.

He said the complete staff of Jays Ltd was behind him in the venture.
