Sitting down to read the first page of Salman Rushdie’s new novel, Victory City, I noticed I heaved a sign of relief.

From the time I started working as a reporter full time, the humble urge to write a novel that has bubbled away in the back of my mind since I was a teenager has become harder and harder to ignore.

The story behind this building is the tale of a man who spent his working life helping women feel beautiful, and used his success in business to help the sick and needy.
