Clinton's fundraising praised

Residents in the wider Clinton area, which has a population of about 1100, have raised more than $70,000 for charity.

The Clinton Lions Club presented the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Neurological Foundation with $37,000 each at its meeting recently.

Club president Drew Pennycook said both were very worthy causes.

When asked how the club consistently raised so much money from a small community, Mr Pennycook said he was not entirely sure.

''As long as we get the support of businesses, we seem to get support from the community, too.

''Still, I'm not sure how we raise so much money,'' Mr Pennycook said.

The club, which has 44 members, raised $74,000 from the Clinton Lions Club Advance Agriculture brassica competition in June.

All items donated by businesses and individuals were auctioned for more than they were worth, helping boost the total raised.

The club also raises money through several days' tailing each year, with volunteers tailing between 20,000 and 25,000 lambs.

Neurosurgery fundraising campaign chairman Brian McMahon said the donation was a ''real bonus'' and the foundation was very thankful for the support.

Speaking on behalf of the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust, intensive care paramedic Doug Flett said the service performed between 450 and 500 missions a year.

Mr Flett said the trust continued to receive ''great support'' from communities like Clinton and Lawrence.

Last year, the Clinton Lions Club raised about $60,000 for the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust, and also raised $60,000 in 2009 towards a first response vehicle for the Clinton Volunteer Fire Brigade.
