Tackling issues through teamwork

The Social Experiment is coming to Dunedin next weekend.

It will be the first time the guided weekend experience has been held in the city, encouraging participants to tackle complex social, environmental and personal issues through teamwork, systems thinking, innovation frameworks and methodologies and mindset coaching.

The initiative started a year ago, stemming from lots of conversations with friends who all wanted to "do something good in the world or make a difference", Alice Marsh said.

It has been driven by six young women, five of whom attended the University of Otago, including Miss Marsh, who hails from Dunedin.

The Social Experiment had partnered with Callaghan Innovation to offer fully-funded scholarships.

There were about 15 spots available for the Dunedin weekend and priority was given to young women aged between 18 and 27 and from Maori and Pacific backgrounds.

More than 100 people had taken part in seven experiments last year. Topics covered included increasing awareness around recycling and bringing communities together over food.

The goal was to make the programme available globally, as it worked so well to connect communities and provide solutions, Miss Marsh said.
