Ashburton College held an open home on Sunday to show off the work of students on the school’s building and construction course. 

Deputy principal Abbey Bruce said the open home showcased the success of the programme.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to see first-hand the skills our Year 13 students have developed and the high standard of workmanship they have achieved over the last school year.”

Students, under the guidance of qualified builder Peter Taylor, spent their time gaining hands-on experience, building two two-bedroom transportable houses.”

Both houses have been sold.

“Beyond the build itself, students are introduced to a comprehensive overview of the wider construction industry, gaining exposure to a variety of trades like scaffolding, roofing, plastering, plumbing and electrical work.”

Bruce said the course not only provided practical trade skills, but also built essential values like teamwork, responsibility and perseverance.

“All vital traits for success in any workforce,” she said.

As well as the useful practical skills, Bruce said the students had the opportunity to complete a BCITO Micro-Credential worth 39 credits.

"Giving them a significant head start toward a future apprenticeship or career in the trades,” she said.
