Surfing enthusiasts will be able to catch a wave at Hanmer Springs later this year.
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa is adding a new surfing experience to its complex, which is scheduled to open in late October this year.
The YourWave surf experience represents a $4 million investment in the region and will be delivered within the existing footprint of Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa (HSTPS).
The development is also within existing capital budgets, supported by an additional $1 million from Hurunui District Council, approved in November 2025.
HSTPS general manager Sarah Wiblin says the installation comes at a time when New Zealand’s tourism sector is recovering strongly, with both domestic and international visitors continuing to seek out new, experience-led travel, despite some global and cost pressures.
She said continuing to invest in Hanmer Springs’ offerings is essential, both for long-term business sustainability and for the wider region.
“This is about bringing in new revenue streams and keeping Hanmer Springs competitive,” says Wiblin.
“While it’s located entirely within our existing site, this will be a standalone experience that people will be able to book separately.”
YourWave will use adjustable wave technology designed and built in New Zealand.
Suitable for beginners through to confident riders, the experience is centred on one-hour group sessions, with riders taking turns and progressing at their own pace.
A locals’ surf club is planned to give the community regular weekly access, and the attraction will also be available for corporate groups, special occasions, and private bookings.
YourWave will use the same geothermal energy that powers the rest of the complex.
Wiblin said the new offer strengthens Hanmer Springs’ year-round appeal.
“Surfing in 28-degree water, surrounded by mountains, will be something you can enjoy at any time of year. It adds another reason for people to visit, whether it’s the middle of summer or the chills of winter.
It’s expected to help grow visitor numbers, extend stays, and support local businesses across the region.
“We’re adding another experience that gives people one more reason to spend a fantastic weekend in our village,” says Wiblin.
The experience will sit alongside the area’s adventure activities, including local walks, Hanmer Jet Boating, and the St James Cycle Trail — as well as a calendar of events like the Alpine Winter Festival coming up in July.
Construction on YourWave has started. The public are invited to follow its progress on the YourWave Hanmer Springs Instagram, @yourwavehanmersprings.
YourWave forms part of a wider programme of upgrades across the facility, with additional enhancements expected later this year.
