Central Dunedin is set to lose about 40 public car parks for two months while repairs are carried out on a parking building.

Dunedin City Council announced this afternoon the public section of the Wall Street car park, which is in St Andrew St, will be be closed from April 1 for two months of repairs.

Repairs were needed to the car park deck, some steel screen sections and a couple of seismic joints, the council said in a statement.

The work was needed because two seismic joints had reached the end of their serviceable life and needed replacing.

Similar work was done on two different joints in March last year.

The south side of the car park will be open to leaseholders only, but the north side – which has about 40 public car parks – will be closed while this work is done.

A second stage of work, more suited to warmer, drier weather, would be done in spring.

The work will cost between $500,000 and $750,000.
