Metal bars are being installed on pedestrian crossing buttons around Dunedin to deter people from kicking them.

A city council spokesman said due to Covid-19, many people were understandably reluctant to touch the buttons with their hands to activate the crossings.

However, kicking the buttons could damage the mechanisms and create a safety issue if the button then did not work.

The council encouraged people to use their elbows to push the buttons instead, the spokesman said.

The council is installing about 270 of the bars at 35 intersections throughout the city, beginning with the highest-use areas.

The cost to install the bars was about $250 per intersection.

Each damaged button cost about $500 to replace.

What a stupid idea and a waste of money. How will that bar make a difference? Now i WANT to go to the nearest crossing to see if i kick the buttons!

They are still kickable/operable with your feet. Just saying...
But hey, keep wasting our money. That's fine. We're used to it.

Where do I go to get my fair share of this cash the council is handing out for stupid ideas? I want to submit a couple of things I think DCC would invest in. First, fur sinks. Tourists will love it! It will bring them back to Dunedin for sure. Next, microwave socks for all the parking enforcement officers. Diet water; yes I have crates and crates I can sell DCC at a discount. DCC should install doggie dryers at dog parks in Dunedin. Ostrich Pillows for DCC employees so they can nap in comfort while at work. Also, I have a large supply of desk hammocks for employees so they can prop their feet up while working. Where can I send my ideas? I need the money and none of these is any worse than any of the other crap DCC wastes money on!

I used one of the apparently modified buttons today by kicking it. Just had to be a little more precise, defeated the DCC $250 money wasting mod. What planet does this council originate from?

Couldn't you have just been a good citizen and used your elbow?
