From a mural to a miner's hut, the public toilets in Lawrence are one step closer to getting a makeover.

The Tuapeka Lawrence Community Company, an entity interested in the beautification and promotion of Lawrence, recently sought permission from the Lawrence Tuapeka Community Board to install a false stacked stone wall and window frames on the exterior of the council-owned public toilets in Ross Pl to give the appearance of a historical miner's hut.

The company envisioned it would take roughly three days for the proposed stonework to be completed with community and volunteer labour.

The perspex and fibreglass panels on the roof would also be replaced and painted in a heritage colour.

Originally, the company wanted to paint a mural on the toilets which would feature scenery related to the town's historic goldmining history.

However, as plans to paint the exterior evolved, the company envisioned a more detailed design.

Board member Mel Foster declared her conflict of interest as a member of the community company as well.

Board chairman Garry McCorkindale said the company was not seeking money from the board so there was no need for it to provide more detail.

The company was relying on volunteer and community support to fund the refurbishment.

Board member Paul Tansley saw no problem with the request.

''There's no cost to us. There's no problem.''

The community board approved the request from the Tuapeka Lawrence Community Company to upgrade the exterior of the toilets subject to further approval by the council.

Council chief executive Steve Hill suggested a service request be made to the council in relation to graffiti on the interior of the toilets.

Removing the "perspex and fibreglass panels on the roof" and replacing them with something painted. I take it they are also adding extra internal lighting? They will won't they? This is the same mob that recently put a sign up pointing the wrong way, so nothing would surprise.
