Almost 200 passengers on one of the world's largest cruise ships have been treated for gastro before the liner docked in Hobart, Australia.

Ovation of the Seas, which carries more than 5800 people, had been sailing for two weeks and arrived in Tasmania on Tuesday after a trip to Singapore.

The ship is due to visit New Zealand including Dunedin on December 11.

Royal Caribbean International, which owns the ship, said 195 people had received over-the-counter medication for gastroenteritis.

The ship would be "comprehensively sanitised and cleansed" once it arrived at its next port of Sydney and before new passengers board.

Tasmania Director of Public Health Mark Veitch said five people from the ship were taken to hospital for check-ups.

"Outbreaks of highly infectious conditions such as gastro and respiratory illness can occur in cruise ships, where a population the size of a medium-sized town mixes closely together," he said.

Ovation of the Seas was scheduled to leave Tasmania yesterday afternoon.

Well, it shouldn't. If sh*t happens, you're supposed to make it happen less often, considering the fares they pay.
