It is all about quality rather than quantity at this year's Dunedin Fringe Festival, which begins at the end of the month.

The line-up for the fifth festival was revealed last night at the programme launch, and director Paul Smith was confident it would be the best yet.

This year's event will feature 62 national and international acts, well down on previous years, but Mr Smith said many of them had appeared at Adelaide and Wellington fringe events and were of an excellent standard.

The line-up ranged from a comedy based on the journey of an Irish Gypsy fiddle player to a circus school for kids.

The festival, which started in 2000, has moved from its original September slot. The 16-day festival will start on March 29.

‘‘We are going to have a giant marquee up in the Museum Reserve and that will be the hub of the Fringe Festival. There will be something going on for everyone,'' Mr Smith said.

‘‘Every one of the days will have events on, building up to the weekends.''

After working on the event for the past 18 months, Mr Smith was especially looking forward to the opening night Southern Lights Opening Spectacular, featuring music, lighting and an acrobatic display, which was free.
