Conrad Cooper's stepfather (Gaz) is a policeman, one who likes things around the house to be neat and tidy. To ensure Conrad assists with this, there is a list of things for him to do.

Of course, keeping Gaz happy isn't necessarily what Conrad needs in order to be happy himself. When Conrad learns about Tane Mahuta, the god of the forest, in class he decides to ask him for help with his life. He promises Tane to be good if only he gets some peace from Gaz. This leads to some amusing situations, not necessarily good for Conrad's wellbeing.

The story is set in 1978, the time of the Bastion Point land grab by the government of the day. Conrad is a witness to the police removal of the Maori protesters and has a decision to make. Is he brave enough? This would be an excellent classroom study book.

Ages 12+.
