CD review: The Bats

Dunedin-Christchurch veterans The Bats manage to pull off the deft trick of sounding fresh yet familiar on their ninth studio album.

The Deep Set showcases anti-frontman Robert Scott’s knack for pop melody, sometimes melded to the melancholy (Rooftops, Looking for Sunshine), often offset by a lurching rhythm section (Rock and Pillars) and always underpinned by the understated, sympathetic yet inventive lead guitar of Kaye Woodward (Antlers).

The Deep Set might occasionally come across as a Sunday arvo jam (Durkestan),  but  the innate, unaffected songcraft is accompanied by a warm blanket of sound that does much to offset a minimalist approach.

• The Bats. The Deep Set. Flying Out.
