CD review: Lord Echo

Lord Echo.
Harmonies.
Soundway.

★★★★

Kiwi producer Lord Echo’s latest effort continues a penchant for dancefloor-tested tunes and grooves, a pick-and-mix collection of reggae, East and West African music, American funk and soul and stops in between.

It almost sounds dusty,  consistent with his proclamation of a recording ethos steeped in a ’60s analogue vibe.

Calling in a range of guest vocalists (including Leila Adu and Mara TK) adds to the eclectic, loose but polished feel of Harmonies, a place where woodwinds swirl (Life On Earth), disco beats battle with syncopated glockenspiels (The Sweetest Meditation) and flanged electric guitar and slapped bass underpin  falsettos (Just Do You).
