CD Reviews: The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Focusing solely on a moment in time, specifically the first Miami Pop Festival of May 1968, a performance some Hendrix fans claim was his very best, this documents a show in which Hendrix turned up the degrees on his guitar genius.

Aided by drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Kramer, Hendrix and co had stepped out of the Electric Ladyland recording sessions for this concert and the trio's focused yet loose vibe is wonderfully evident, from the funky clatter of Fire to the extended improvisation of Tax Free and a 12-minute version of Red House that manages to be understated despite all that dexterity.
