CD reviews: Nelly Furtado

One-time folk-pop singer, then R and B groover and Timbaland collaborator, Canadian Nelly Furtado continues her chameleonic career with her first album in five years.

Produced by Grammy-winning Texan John Congleton, The Ride offers a grab-bag of influences, from the confident electro-pop meets hip-hop vibe of Live, Paris Sun and Flatline, to a vibrant, staccato channelling of The Bangles (Magic).

And when she ventures into the occasional slow jam/ballad (Pipe Dreams), there is just enough in glitchy percussion to stave off the hints of cliche that come via an overplayed Hammond organ.
