CD reviews: The Phoenix Foundation

Well, who would've thought ... the Phoenix Foundation does disco-tech?

And why not?

Given the Wellington outfit is into its sixth studio album (plus a few decent EPs), surely it's allowed to have a little fun, to not only get weird (as it has long proved capable) but wild, albeit with big dollops of kraut-rock restraint.

Having played with sequencers and synthesisers throughout its long career, the band turns up the volume on the electronica and lets its acrobatic and adventurous rhythm section lead the show.

For an example, go no further than Mountain, its groovy syncopation spiced with spiky guitars. Taut but trippy.
