CD Reviews: Vance Joy

Impeccably timed for summer's arrival, this debut EP finds Melbourne minstrel Vance Joy position himself squarely as a conventional singer-songwriter: pleasant, yet thoroughly unremarkable.

The likes of Emmylou, From Afar and Play With Fire show keen melodic instincts, while the cheeky ukulele flourishes and sun-drenched harmonies of second single Riptide justify heavy rotation.

Lyrically, however, familiar ground is trod, with Joy slotting in alongside any number of sensitive souls with finger-picking instincts who all too frequently find themselves falling in and out of love.
