Music Theatre Dunedin:

Sister Act

Coronation Hall, Mosgiel

Thursday, May 14

A packed house raised the roof with enjoyment on Thursday night at Music Theatre Dunedin’s season of Sister Act in Coronation Hall, Mosgiel.

There was so much excellence on display. From beginning to end, this show was a choreographer’s dream, and Olivia Larkins delivered in spades. From the sublime to the ridiculous, movements were fast, slick, and funny.

The simple, yet versatile set, features a glorious stained glass window. Scene transitions involving altar boys lacked pace, but will tighten throughout the season. The costumes are hilariously apt. One might ask what could be done with a nun’s habit? Lots, obviously!

Director Sara Georgie has cast the show perfectly, and found and delivered every ounce of humour and pathos.

In the role of Dolores, Jessica Ruck-Nu’u took us on an emotional journey ranging from sassy to sorrowful, confident to frightened, and loneliness to friendship.

Alethea Chittenden as the Mother Superior was simply superior. She spoke and sang with elegance, simplicity, gravitas and exemplary diction.

Sister Mary Patrick and Sister Mary Lazarus were humorously portrayed by Jane Craigie-Read and Bridget Telfer-Milne respectively. Clare Lewis as Sister Mary Robert convincingly played the young postulant.

Lady in the Long Black Dress sung by Joey, (Grant Paris) TJ (Jack Hollis-Wilson) and Pablo (Joseph Lydiate) had great comedic intent. Mason Bouzaid (Eddie) and Joshua Larkins (Curtis) were a great foil for each other, not only in size but also in voice. Peter Hocking’ s Monsignor O’Hara, in realistic ecclesiastical robes, deftly delivered religious jokes, but without mockery.

The ensemble singing was very tight with good intonation. Sam van Betuw conducted very efficiently. The orchestra played with tight rhythmic vitality, but care needed to be taken with the mix so that some voices were not overpowered.

The show runs until Saturday May 23. Don’t miss it!
