Review: Lykke Li, 'I Never Learn'

Don't go searching for dance tracks on this third album from Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li; it's a sombre affair.

In setting out to avoid being pigeonholed as a pop artist, Li has mined a dark seam of doubt and anxiety arising from a relationship breakdown to deliver a consistently melancholic and single-paced work that will test the faith of those turned on by her 2008 electronic dance-pop debut Youth Novels.

There are some genuinely powerful and moving moments but Li's nasal voice and vague diction make the job of connecting with her through her lyrics tough work.
