Four seasons of the show ran between 1983 and 1989 and won millions of fans.
Blackadder also made stars of Tony Robinson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Miranda Richardson.
It has regularly been voted one of the best British television shows of all time.
Fans had long given up hope of a fifth season, but Atkinson told ITV's Daybreak show in the UK that he hadn't ruled out making another series.
"It could be reprised in some form or other," he said.
"I think there is a possibility of a fifth series." But the 56-year-old Mr Bean star said the time difference meant there would have to be some changes to the show's format.
"We're all getting a bit old, sadly, to play the characters in the way we did so we'd have to shift it a bit to make it work.
"They've all got slightly different attitudes and experiences to call upon now. It would be nice to get them all back together," he said.
