Let’s celebrate local: We are local, and in our dedicated bookstore in the Golden Centre Mall on George Street we select an extensive range of books that cater to all our customers’ interests.

Here at Paper Plus Dunedin we love to look after all children’s reading pleasures, stocking everything you can imagine through from birth to young adults.  From the old enduring favs like Hairy Maclary and Hungry Caterpillar, through to what is new and popular.  Two of the many areas of note that we have is space dedicated to NZ picture books and Te Reo Māori Children’s books. There are some interesting older children’s books coming through translated in Te Reo such as the Harry Potter Books.

It is important for baby and toddler to be introduced to books as early as possible.  Books help create a special bond between parents and children.  They’re introduced to words and sounds of language, activating areas of the brain in readiness for learning to read.  They learn that books are special and not just another toy and how to handle and look after a book - many of us still have favourite books from our childhood tucked away.  Babies and toddlers are learning how books work starting with durable board books, black & white books, cloth books, bath books, and even buggy books!  Children begin to become aware of a basic story structure which has a beginning, a middle and an end, and that there are story patterns like repetition, rhyming and rhythm.  That’s why Hairy Maclary remains so popular! They discover the words and pictures work together to tell a story. All the while they are expanding their vocabulary.

This all lays the foundation for a love of books and reading which will help them with learning and reading for pleasure in the future.
