Hill cooks at Ophir's Pitches Store and also recently made the finals of the Silver Fern Farms Premier Awards.

Also to receive the honour were Steve Beere from Mint Restaurant (Napier), Shaun Clouston from Logan Brown (Wellington), Alistair Forster from Mahana Estate (Nelson) and Scott Kennedy from Nero Restaurant (Palmerston North).

The five chefs presented their skills at a reveal event where they served a signature beef and lamb canape dish.

''Our chefs are placing New Zealand on the food map as they display skills to rival the best found anywhere,'' food writer and Listener columnist Lauraine Jacobs said.

Twenty-four Otago restaurants received excellence awards in 2016.
