Wine review: Sparkling sauvignon blanc wines

Why people didn't think of adding bubbles to sauvignon blanc before, I don't know.

This delicious, refreshing form of New Zealand's best known variety has certainly been a hit this summer.

But don't forget other bubblies - there are some fine methode champenoise made here too.

Best value: Shooting Star Methode Traditionnelle Sauvignon Blanc $22
The most elegant and interesting sparkling sauvignon I've tasted, this is bottle-fermented, complex and intriguing with hints of kiwi and guava, and a stylish long finish.

A delicious, balanced, wine by Eveline Fraser.

4 stars (out of 5); good value.

Best under $20: Monkey Bay Sparkling Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc Pinot Gris $17
A fruit bomb, sweet and mouth-filling with oodles of ripe fruit toned down with a hint of pungency.

3 stars; good value.

Spy Valley Echelon Brut 2008 $32
A lively, dry methode traditionelle, fermented and aged in old oak which contributes to its texture and mouthfeel.

3 stars; poor value.

An elegant wine with hints of freshly baked bread, strawberries, nuts and honey, complex, rich and charming, with finesse and a long finish.

Named after his daughter and made by Daniel Le Brun, owner of No 1 Family Estate

5 stars, average value

A rich, mouth-filling wine hinting of buttered toast, Marmite and nuts with a clean finish and long aftertaste.

Although it bears Daniel Le Brun's name, the brand is now owned by Lion Nathan.

4 stars, average value.

Herbal with floral undertones, hints of nuts and guavas, a mouth-filling mousse and an off-dry finish.

3 stars, poor value.

Although wine sent for review is tasted blind to eliminate preconceptions, all wine tasting and evaluation is subjective. These are personal recommendations. charmian.smith@odt.co.nz
