When former Silver Fern Jodi Brown runs out on to the netball court for the Southern Steel, she knows her husband, Markham, fully understands the physical commitment it takes for her to be at the top of her game.

Not only was Markham involved in regional level sport - playing basketball for the Otago Nuggets from 1992 to 1998 - he also has a background in fitness training, which means he recognises the many hours that go into a peak performance.

"You have to put in the time or you don't get the results," Basketball Otago manager Markham (40) says.

While sweating it out at the gym and training with the team might have fitted more easily into their schedule before they had their two girls, Kiana and Aria, the Browns say it is all about being organised and having the days well planned out.

They feel lucky to have a "very supportive family" and a close-knit community, who help out while Jodi does her pre-season training four to five times weekly, for between 60 and 90 minutes a session.

The pay-off for Markham is the "positive, fun and exciting" elements his wife's sport brings into their family dynamic.

"It's fantastic to see her succeed and get recognised for that and it's enjoyable to watch someone competing at a high level," he says.

Another bonus is that the girls enjoy "watching Mummy on TV".

After playing for her country from 2003 to 2007, the desire to do so still burns for Jodi (30) and Markham is backing her all the way.

"I'd like to see her try again [for the Silver Ferns]," he says.

Even though it would mean more trips away from him and the girls, Markham finds the positives in Jodi travelling with her team.

He admits to "missing her a lot" but enjoying the chance to go surfing without having to ask if it fits in with her day first.
