A woman accused of attacking Victorian MP Jane Garrett remains under police guard in a Melbourne hospital.
The 43-year-old former emergency services minister suffered minor injuries when she was assaulted, allegedly by a 52-year-old woman while walking along Drummond St in the suburb of Carlton yesterday afternoon.
Ms Garrett was grabbed by the hair and almost pushed through a window.
The 52-year-old was arrested on Monday night and taken to hospital for assessment. She has not been charged.
Media reports suggest Ms Garrett - who resigned as emergency services minister in June at the height of the CFA (Country Fire Authority) pay dispute - knew her attacker and had previously taken out an intervention order against her.
Ms Garrett said she was in shock.
"It was very frightening,'' the MP told the Herald Sun. "I am grateful for the outstanding professionalism of the police.''
Friends and foes from across the political spectrum expressed their support for the MP.
"I'm horrified by reports that Jane Garrett has been attacked today. Hope she is ok and her assailant is caught,'' shadow minister Margaret Fitzherbert tweeted.
"Just heard the terrible news that Jane Garrett has been assaulted in Carlton. Hope she is okay. My thoughts are with her and her family,'' Greens MP Ellen Sandell said.
