Whangārei residents Robbie and Wilma Byrnes have returned to the Invercargill New Zealand Motor Caravan Association Camping Ground after an enjoyable first trip three years ago.

The 68-year-old couple first stayed at the site in 2022.

After the success of that trip, the duo returned this year in their blue Ford Transit campervan, which was built by Mr Byrnes.

The retired engineer has equipped it with all the "bells and whistles" needed to traverse the South Island for months.

Mrs Byrnes said towing a small car helped make visiting sites easier.

"We spent a fantastic Christmas Day in Bluff yesterday, so leaving the camper here and travelling there in our little car made it so convenient," she said.
