The wet afternoon weather did not dampen spirits at the Interislander Summer Festival at Wingatui Racecourse yesterday.

It had been more 40 years since Sue Cook last attended the horse races but she had a blast yesterday, travelling from Kaiwera to spend Christmas Day in Mosgiel with family and friends.

"I haven’t been to the races since I was studying nursing, but it’s great to be back with family," she said.

During race four, the horse she bet on — What’s Up Alf — was coming in last but she thought she would spur it on.

"He still came last but I thought maybe I would will it to do a bit better by cheering.

"I can’t read the booklet or quite follow what’s happening but it’s lovely to be here."

Brisbane woman Theresa Vossen, originally from Dunedin, said she had travelled over for Christmas with children Claire and Michael to visit the new arrival to the family, 9-week-old niece Sophie.

She said she welcomed the afternoon showers at the races.

"We haven’t had rain for months in Australia, so it’s lovely to have. I feel very appreciative of it."

Otago Racing Club general manager Rebecca Adlam said the races were once again a successful family day.

"Everyone’s here with their Christmas leftovers, picnicking and watching the races.

"It’s always a day for families and the rain has just meant people go inside or under shelter rather than going home.

"Overall it’s been a fantastic day."

She said she did not yet know the exact numbers of attendees, but it would be about the same as last year, about 1000 racegoers.
