The as yet unsexed albatross chick at Taiaroa Head will be named via a public vote. The first step in the process finished yesterday as the final suggestions were submitted.
Otago Peninsula Trust marketing manager Sophie Barker said 1672 suggested names were received for the chick.
They ranged from the esoteric to the political with pop culture also getting a nod, as the public offered up Donald Trump, variations of Ed Sheeran and even Lord Albert Grumster.
Ms Barker said she had no preference for the bird’s final name, but opportunities lay ahead depending on what was chosen. And for those watching the American political scene, there would be the uncomfortable realisation that Donald Trump had been a long-shot for the presidency there.
The winning name would also be announced on July 4, — Independence Day in the US.
The chick shared at least one similarity with the controversial US president, Ms Barker said.
"They have the same messy hair-do."
The suggestions would be whittled down by the Department of Conservation next week, before Te Poari a Pukekura (the Pukekura Co-management Trust) chose the final five for the public to vote on.
A name that was "suitable for a royal chick that lives in an iconic area" was what was being sought.
Voting opens on June 20.
Name suggestions
Public suggestions for the Taiaroa Head chick’s name (and the reason for the entry).
Dave: It’s like a really likeable mate who is cooking BBQ.
Alf: The Doc lady on [TV One’s] Breakfast said that the albatross was a little "dishevelled" and "grumpy" so the name Alf (short for Alf Stewart) would be great.
Bof: Bundle of Fluff.
Elvis: This chick has stage presence.
Fuzz Nut: Because he’s a bit cranky and his hair sticks up.
Jessica Albatross.
Shim: Is it a she or him? It’s a shim.
