Actions of bystanders praised

A witness has praised the rapid response of bystanders after a man was hit by a car and seriously injured  in Dundas St late on Saturday.

The witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was walking up Dundas St when he saw the victim lying on the road about 11pm.

"There were at least five people dealing with the lad."

He said one bystander was on the phone to emergency services as another supported the victim’s head, while others cleared broken glass from around the man as he lay on the road. The witness said he was impressed  by  the bystanders’ clear understanding of first aid training and their calm and reassuring words as the victim regained  consciousness.

"They all seemed to understand what had to be done.

"They are absolute legends. Hope the lad pulls through OK."

St John spokesman Elliot Steel said the man, in his 20s, was transported to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition just after 11pm.

A police spokeswoman said officers also attended, but she had no further information on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800-555-111.
