All aboard! Inclusivity the focus of new boats

A new pair of accessible boats will open up sailing opportunities to Otago’s disabled community.

The boats have been loaned to the Sailability Otago Trust, a group dedicated to creating inclusive sailing in Otago Harbour, based at the Broad Bay Boating Club in Dunedin.

Trust chairwoman Anette Seifert said the specially designed boats had many elements that made sailing accessible.

Instead of a firm seat, sailors would sit on a loose hammock-like one that would help those with limited mobility.

The two boats were entirely controlled from the centre, including the steering and the ropes.

Those changes opened up sailing to many who could have never sailed previously, such as people who used wheelchairs, she said.

The boats were designed to be controlled by one able-bodied and one disabled sailor.

They were very stable and "almost unsinkable".

Taking a boat out on the water was always a wonderful, positive experience, Mrs Seifert, who had been a sailor for many years, said.

She wanted to share that joy with as many people as possible and had no doubt the new boats would be popular among the disabled community.

The boats had been transported down from Sailability Auckland, which had given the boats to the trust on an extended loan.

Getting them down to Dunedin had taken a lot of goodwill and effort from the community.

Port Otago had also helped by providing a shipping container for the boats to be kept in.

Broad Bay Boating Club commodore Lynn Cooke said there was still work to be done before the boats were ready for the water, such as installing equipment at the wharf, but members of the disabled community should be able to set sail next summer.
