Peter Crowley does. He is one of the lucky riders who has been lent a horse by Ray and Rei Owens.
The couple have been with the Otago Peninsula Pony Club for about 50 years and have always been willing to supply children in need of a horse with one of theirs.
Horses had always been a family hobby, with the couple's children and grandchildren all riding.
Mrs Owen delighted in the enjoyment children got from riding and loved to teach them.
When Peter took up riding last year, she found he was getting a "hard time" from his pony.
She helped him out by lending him Sara Dane to "give him confidence", she said.
Aged 30, she was considered a "very old horse" but also a "safe pony for learners".
Over the years, about 14 other children without a horse had ridden Sarah Dane.
"There always seems to be somebody in need of a horse," Mrs Owen said.
They were all at the 10th Mitavite South Island pony club show jumping championships, hosted by Taieri District Pony Club yesterday.
Taieri club chairwoman Anne Beattie said about 180 9- to 21-year-olds were in the two-day event, which runs from 9am to 2.30pm today.
The costs
While many pony club riders receive hand-me-down gear and even free horses, average costs are:
> Annual membership: $50.
> Hard hat, safe boots and jodhpurs: $150.
> Pony: $3000 (but can range up to $30,000 for more competitive riders).
