A woman was taken into custody just before 5pm today after an Armed Offenders Squad callout to a Magdala St house, in the Dunedin suburb of Musselburgh.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the woman's partner called police just after 2pm, after the woman threatened to harm herself.

The man told police the woman may have had access to firearms stored in the home.

"Police were not sure if she had access to firearms in a safe at the address but we presumed, as she lived in the house, that was a possibility,'' Snr Sgt Benn said.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the woman responded to police appeals to surrender just before 5pm.

The woman was a licensed firearms holder and police would remove weapons from the house.

Armed offenders squad members from Dunedin converged on Magdala St, and police put cordons in place at Cavell St and Tainui Rd.
