Officers respond to reports of what sounded like gunshots in Mulford St, in Concord, Dunedin, yesterday.

A car backfiring sparked an armed police callout and the closure of the street.

Police were alerted to reports of what sounded like gunshots about 10.15am.

A spokeswoman said the armed offenders squad was called in and the street was cordoned off as a precaution.

She said the bangs appeared to have been a vehicle backfiring at a property.

No injuries were reported.
