About 25 riders took part in the leisurely ride through the city.

Southern Heritage Trust founding trustee Ann Barsby said the annual ride was one of eight events in yesterday's Town and Gown: Heritage Festival programme.

"This is an opportunity for the public to join in and visit the university in springtime with all this blossom - lovely," she said.

"Dunedin's heritage is particularly important. [We are] creating more awareness and value, and let's celebrate it."

The two-yearly festival this year partnered with the University of Otago, which is celebrating its 1869 founding. But the Tweed Ride, too, had a 150th anniversary. The first bicycle built in Auckland to be ridden in Dunedin was in 1869.
