Arrest made in Highgate Dairy case

A teenager has been arrested and charged with the attempted knifepoint robbery of Highgate Dairy, in Dunedin, earlier this month.

Police announced yesterday a 15-year-old Dunedin boy had been arrested and charged with assault with intent to rob in relation to the August 8 incident.

An offender wearing dark clothes and dark sunglasses walked into the dairy in Highgate carrying what was believed to be a large knife about 6.45pm on August 8.

He threatened a staff member before running off when he realised other people were in the store.

The teenager was referred to Youth Aid, a police spokeswoman said.

The incident bore a similarity to an attempted robbery in May when a knife-wielding man wearing a bandanna and hooded jersey demanded cash from staff before also running off empty-handed.

Police had not linked the two incidents.

''There's no suggestion at the moment that the two are linked,'' the spokeswoman said.

No-one had been arrested in relation to the earlier attempted robbery, but inquiries were ongoing, she said.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
