Auditorium too small for King's prizegiving

Staff organising this year's King's High School prizegivings have been forced to relocate the ceremonies from the school's performing arts centre to the Regent Theatre in the Octagon.

The junior and senior prizegivings have traditionally been held on separate days in the King's and Queen's performing arts centre in Bayfield Rd.

However, principal Dan Reddiex said the auditorium seated only about 380 people and was no longer large enough to accommodate the pupils and their parents for the ceremonies.

''Our senior school is bigger than that already. We can't fit all the parents and the students in the performing arts centre.''

It was announced recently the school will hold a combined junior and senior prizegiving at the Regent Theatre on November 5.

Mr Reddiex said the present school roll was about 880 pupils - the largest the roll had been since 2002.

This year was also the first time since 2006 the school's roll had surpassed that of Otago Boys' High School, which sits at 855.

King's was scheduled to begin several small capital projects before the end of the year, in which the front of the school would be upgraded, he said.

Several teaching spaces would be transformed back into classrooms.

''They will be needed to accommodate the growing roll that next year promises.

''Our year 9 enrolments once again look like they will eclipse 200 students.

''Accompanying these new teaching spaces will also be the opportunity to employ a number of new staff.''

It was an exciting continuation of the faith that the community had expressed in the school's development over the past few years, Mr Reddiex said.
