Mixing yoga with butterflies has helped Otago Museum win an award at the Service IQ New Zealand Museum Awards.

The museum won the most innovative public programme award at last night's awards ceremony in Palmerston North.

Judges said museum spaces could be used for a variety of purposes, and through the unique, innovative and ''out of the box'' public programme, the visitor experience went from passive observation to a more involving interaction with the exhibit.

''Yoga as an exercise combines the physical and the spiritual - not areas with which museums regularly get involved.''

Other award winners were: Exhibition excellence art: Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts (Auckland); exhibition excellence science and technology: Locales Stardome Observatory (Wellington); exhibition excellence social history: Nelson Provincial Museum (Nelson); exhibition excellence Taonga Maori: Tairawhiti Museum (Gisborne); most innovative use of Te Reo Maori: Auckland War Memorial Museum (Auckland); museum visitor experience: Mokau Museum (Mokau); museum project excellence: The Suter Art Gallery (Nelson); museum shop best new range: Auckland War Memorial Museum (Auckland); museum arts access: Te Manawa (Palmerston North).
