Baby born on way to hospital

A baby girl was born in an ambulance several hundred metres short of Dunedin Hospital yesterday.

The expectant mother was being brought to Dunedin from Alexandra by ambulance to deliver the baby when her daughter was born as the vehicle travelled along Cumberland St about 2.30pm, a St John spokesman said.

The family declined to be interviewed or photographed yesterday.

However, they said both baby and mother were doing well, "thanks to Cumberland St", a hospital spokeswoman said.
