Board fraud policy 'state of the art'

Other organisations might be interested in Otago District Health Board's fraud policy, which is a cut above what many provide, deputy board chairwoman Susie Johnstone says.

Mrs Johnstone, who chairs the board audit, finance and risk management committee, made the comment when presenting the reviewed policy to the board for approval this week.

The board introduced the new comprehensive policy a year ago and approved the minor amendments on Thursday.

Board chairman Errol Millar said the policy was considered "state of the art" when introduced last year.

He also noted board chief executive Brian Rousseau, drawing heavily on his practical experience in Otago, was working with the Ministry of Health and HealthPAC on a national project looking at ways to reduce the risk of fraud in the health sector.

Board member Louise Carr said because the policy also covered those involved in contracts with the board, it was important they knew about it.

Regional chief financial officer Robert Mackway-Jones said the policy could be made available through a link on the board website.

At this stage it can be found on the board site under the board agenda for March 5.

• Former board employee Michael Swann and his business associate and friend Kerry Harford are due to be sentenced next week in the High Court in Dunedin on charges of defrauding the board of $16.9 million between 2000 and 2006.
