Bryony Harrison and son Aurelius Yates, of Dunedin, search for bedtime reading at the Dunedin Public Libraries book sale.
Aurelius Yates is only 3 months old, but already he knows that when he sees a book, it is time to sleep.

So it was no surprise he was "out for the count" yesterday when his mum Bryony Harrison was sorting through books at the Dunedin Public Libraries book sale.

"We read to him every night as part of his bedtime routine — book, bath then bed. He sleeps for nine hours overnight."

She and her partner, Hoani Yates, are both University of Otago students and said buying children’s books was expensive.

"Being students, it’s not like we’ve got lots of money for toys and books and things."So this is great. There are some great bargains here."

She said the sale allowed her to buy books to help her son develop over the next few months.

"We’re looking at things that will stimulate him now — things with pictures.

"The more they hear your voice, the more their brain develops and their language skills develop."

The annual sale, at the city library car park in Moray Pl, began yesterday at 9.30am and will continue over the weekend from 11am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Dunedin Public Libraries events co-ordinator Kay Mercer said the book sale was an opportunity to stock up on reading material and other items as the nights got longer.

She said there was a wide range of reading material, including adult and children’s fiction, non-fiction and magazines which were no longer needed for the lending collections.DVDs, posters and other miscellaneous items would also be for sale, she said.

"It’s exciting to be holding the sale in the basement again.

"It always has a real buzz about it and it also allows us to run a full-sized book sale with a wide range of material on sale."
