Building is about to begin on a new, long-awaited world-class crematorium in Mosgiel.

Hope and Sons is working closely with the Dunedin City Council to gain its final consent - a building consent - in the consents process.

Managing funeral director Michael Hope said since the application was filed

in December good progress had been made,

Fire engineering reports and compliance schedules were confirmed this month.

''We are working closely with our builders and the DCC consents team to ensure a quality and safe complex.''

Mr Hope expected the consent to be granted mid-March and construction would begin soon after on its Dukes Rd North site.

It was hoped to have it operating by October this year.`We are all getting very excited now. Everything is going to come together this year,'' Mr Hope said.

The Dukes Rd location complied with the DCC's land use and district plan, and was given an air discharge permit in 2013 by the Otago Regional Council that would last for 35 years, he said.

''We envisage being the main provider of cremation services in Dunedin, Mosgiel, and the region within the next three years.

''The Dukes Rd crematorium will be able to provide enhanced cremation services to all funeral directors and families in and around our region.''

From Dukes Rd, the site would look much like a house. There would be no large chimney or high-walled building.

''There is no provision for a large chapel on-site, but the facility will have privacy and parking, with landscaped surrounding and views ...

a tranquil setting.''

However, the equipment inside the building would be leading technology, he said.

''It will be a modern, state-of-the-art, world-class facility.''
