The former Dunedin Convention Centre has become a maze of wires with nearly 25km of copper, fibre optic and digital video cabling being installed as staff at NHNZ prepare to move into their new film-making facility.

The Melville St site has allowed NHNZ to create a multimillion-dollar premier television production hub with the best equipment available.

It will have 12 editing suites, three sound suites, a graphics suite, a new media unit, a studio and offices.

Managing director Michael Stedman said the television production company had out-grown its former Dunedin Television Studios site in Dowling St, where it had been based since 1977.

NHNZ technical and IT systems manager Wayne Poll said the new building allowed the company to start from scratch and create a system which was not only more practical, but also future proof.

"The building is wired extensively for gigabit ethernet - a very fast computer data network.

"Because we do a lot of video, it allows us to access our video assets very quickly.

"Everyone's computer will run up to eight television channels all the time so they can record, view or watch stuff from their computer terminal."

Mr Poll said the television channels were not for casual viewing.

It was just one of many capabilities the cabling would offer staff to make their work quicker and easier.

"It will increase productivity by up to 15%, and we'll also be able to change technologies far more quickly and easily as it comes along."

Mr Stedman said the company's move would start in July and take about two months to complete.

The sale of NHNZ's Garrison Hall site in Dowling St was still to be finalised, but there had been significant interest in the building and it was hoped a sale would be made in the next two weeks, he said.
