Motorists parking on bus stops will have more chance of receiving a $40 fine as the Dunedin City Council begins an enforcement campaign next week.

After concerns from bus drivers about the high number of motorists parking on inner-city bus stops, the council has directed its parking officers to keep a closer eye on the situation.

Council development services manager Kevin Thompson said motorists on bus stops created a dangerous situation for other drivers trying to move around an angled bus, and made it difficult for passengers to access the bus safely.

"Illegal parking on bus stops is frustrating for bus companies trying to maintain schedules, and for drivers trying to carry out safe pick-ups and set-downs."
