Call for 'utu' over jersey

A Maori elder and descendant of the man responsible for the All Black jersey, is urging the Argentinian team to "exact utu on our behalf" during its clash with England tomorrow.

Upoko David Ellison said he would declare the Pumas, the Argentinian ambassador and the team's supporters as honorary members of Kati Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki.

"I believe this would provide the Pumas with the kaha [strength] to match the black English jersey and allow those unhappy with Nike's choice of colour to be bonded to the Pumas, who, in turn, will have the added edge to exact utu [revenge] on our behalf."

Mr Ellison said he was disappointed by England's decision to wear an alternative black strip during the Rugby World Cup.

In 1893, his great uncle, Tom Ellison, recommended the New Zealand Rugby Football Union adopt a black jersey with silver fern.

"I don't think the English team realise how important the black jersey is to us ... we are not blaming the English team. We are blaming the suppliers, who we believe chose that colour as a marketing ploy," he said"The alternative coloured strip would certainly 'blackfire' on them," he said.

Earlier this year, the Rugby Football Union confirmed the all-black "away" kit would be worn during England's first Rugby World Cup match, against Argentina at Otago Stadium tomorrow. Mr Ellison said he did not want fans to boo the English players if they came out in the black strip "as that would not be cricket".

However, he hoped the Argentinian team would win as "that would get our mana back".
